Chloramphenicol CAS No.:56-75-7

Full-Spectrum Bacteriostatic Performance

Chloramphenicol powerfully inhibits the proliferation of numerous pathogenic microorganisms, making it a versatile antibacterial raw material.

Solubility & Environmental Stability

It shows high solubility in methanol, ethanol, acetone and ethyl acetate, and remains chemically stable within neutral to weakly acidic surroundings, simplifying diversified formula preparation.

Stereoisomer Potency Gap

Natural levomycin (L-isomer) boasts outstanding antibacterial strength. Synthetic racemic chloramphenicol merely reaches half the biological activity of its natural counterpart.

Clinical Application & Storage Specifications

Its broad antibacterial coverage and stable chemical properties support clinical treatment for bacterial diseases. Dark storage under inert gas atmosphere is mandatory to preserve its maximum medicinal efficacy.

Product Details
Also known as levomycin, chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic extracted from Streptomyces chlorinus, which suppresses the reproduction of bacteria to achieve antibacterial effects. Its biologically active component is the natural L-isomer. Synthetic chloramphenicol appears as white or pale yellow needle or flaky crystals with no odor and an intense bitter flavor. This material dissolves poorly in water, diethyl ether and chloroform, yet shows excellent solubility in methanol, ethanol, acetone and ethyl acetate; it cannot be dissolved in benzene or petroleum ether.

Chloramphenicol CAS No.:56-75-7

This antibiotic maintains stable chemical properties in neutral and slightly acidic water solutions, yet its antibacterial strength degrades rapidly in alkaline surroundings. Industrial synthetic chloramphenicol belongs to racemate mixtures, containing both active L-isomer and ineffective D-isomer. Given that the D-isomer has zero bacteriostatic capacity, synthetic finished products only deliver 50% of the antibacterial efficiency of natural chloramphenicol.
