Product Details
Known as dicyandiamide—commonly shortened to DICY or DCD—this organic substance has the chemical formula C₂H₄N₄. Chemically, it functions as the dimer form of cyanamide and also serves as a cyano-derivative of guanidine. Appearing as a white crystalline solid powder, it dissolves in water, alcohols, ethylene glycol, and dimethylformamide, yet hardly dissolves in ether or benzene. It maintains stability under dry conditions.

Applications of Dicyandiamide (CAS 461-58-5):
Raw Material for Guanidine Salts and Cyanamide: Dicyandiamide reacts with acids to form various guanidine salts. It also reacts with benzonitrile to yield cyanamide, an intermediate used in the manufacture of coatings, laminates, and molding powders.
Dye Fixative: The resin produced from the reaction between dicyandiamide and formaldehyde is utilized as a dye-fixing agent.
Fertilizer Additive: Dicyandiamide and its compound fertilizers help inhibit nitrifying bacteria in soil, slow the conversion rate of nitrogen fertilizers, reduce nitrogen loss, and improve fertilizer efficiency.
Fine Chemical Intermediate: In pharmaceuticals, it is used to produce guanidine nitrate, sulfonamides, thiourea, and other compounds such as nitrocellulose stabilizers, rubber accelerators, steel hardeners, synthetic leather fillers, and adhesives. It also reacts with formic acid to form 5-azacytosine, a pharmaceutical intermediate.
Other Uses: Dicyandiamide serves as a testing reagent for cobalt, nickel, copper, and palladium; finds applications in organic synthesis; and functions as a stabilizer for nitrocellulose, a hardening agent, detergent, vulcanization accelerator, and a component in resin synthesis.
