Product Details
Azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN), represented by the chemical formula [(CH3)2C(CN)]2N2, is a white crystalline substance. It is soluble in alcohols and various organic solvents but remains insoluble in water. AIBN is commonly employed as a foaming agent in plastics and rubber, as well as a radical initiator in polymerization processes. It is denser than water and dissolves readily in alcohol-based solvents. This compound is moderately toxic when ingested and is highly flammable, easily ignited by sparks or flames, with intense and persistent burning. Combustion of AIBN results in the formation of toxic nitrogen oxides. It is also used as a catalyst in vinyl polymerizations and as a blowing agent in plastic manufacturing.

2,2'-Azobis(2-methylpropionitrile), also known as AIBN, is commonly used as an initiator in radical polymerization processes. Its molecular structure allows for easy cleavage, leading to the generation of high-energy activation molecules. AIBN is the most widely employed azo initiator due to its stable decomposition process, which produces only a single type of free radical and minimizes unwanted side reactions. Consequently, it is frequently utilized in the kinetic analysis of free radical polymerization.
